Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted April 23, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted April 23, 2018 The stone chip in my heated windscreen has become a crack from top to bottom, so I need a new screen. What’s the best route for getting a new screen for a Caterham? I have windscreen cover with my insurance (£75 excess) – should I just contact the insurance company and let them do the donkey work or is there a swifter, more efficient route?ThanksNick
SM25T
Some insurance companis waive the excess if you fit it yourself. It's only 6 screws. Sevens and Classics sell screens a lot cheaper than Caterham
Tom_Arundel
I took my cracked screen glass out of the frame, took it to the local glass company who cut me 2 for less than £90. I refitted it in 1hr. no problems. I keep the 2nd one as a spare as this is the 3rd major bullet hole.....someone dosen`t like me!
TomB
Tom - presumably these replacement screen you had cut weren't heated screens though. If you want that doing, a glazier cant do it.
HendrixsWhiteStratReturns
Hi NickI let my insurers (Adrian Flux) sort it - took about 4/5 days for them to source it (heated screen) and then I just drove in for the appointment and that was it. I have the old screen and will get a piece of plain glass cut and fitted as a back up screen.
Wrightpayne
Slight thread hijack - Did anyone see Wheeler Dealers (latest series with Ant) renovating an old Saab in the states. They needed a new windscreen but none in the USA, so took the old one to a windscreen warehouse with 5000 different windscreens and found one with the same profile albeit much bigger. The owner then proceeded to cut it down to fit. His skill was incredible using a glass cutter on both sides and heat to crack it and soften the plastic middle which he then cut with a stanley blade - amazing!Ian
Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted April 25, 2018 Author Area Representative Share Posted April 25, 2018 I've left it to Adrian Flux and their windscreen suppliers to sort out now... the latter contacted me yesterday and I pointed them in the direction of Sevens & Classics who provided them with a quote for one (they hold screens in stock)... I will call tomorrow to see what they have decided... fingers crossed as I have a trip to DVA on Saturday, but reckon I would be OK using a cracked screen for a single trip... andyl
I also have a cracked screen, called my insurance company and within 1hr National Windscreens called me, he convinced me that if I removed the windscreen and took it to them he could change it a lot quicker. So did what he said and they ordered a new screen that day, just called them up 2 days later and still no windscreen from Caterham. Called Caterham it transpires that they only sell heated windscreens in the frame and they have no record of shipping one to National Windscreens, they also are on back-order. Called National Windscreens back and realised they are friendly but don't know what they are doing.I can see this is going to take awhile.Oh the delight of owning a Caterham :0)

andyl
Thanks SM and Tom, it's in the hands (or not) of the Insurance company, I will however let National Windscreens know about 7's and Classics.

Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted May 4, 2018 Author Area Representative Share Posted May 4, 2018 Update: in the end I went through my insurance company (Adrian Flux) and they've sorted it - well their windscreen company contacted me who said they were going to go through Caterham Cars - I told them not to bother and put them in contact with Sevens & Classics who have sorted it (thanks guys if you're reading this), so now going to get windscreen fitted on the 19th... andyl
Duck..............It needs to be a heated screen to pass the MOT, if they cut one it will be plain glass?
andyl
Just called National Windscreens (Poole) and they have done a great job, apparently they do stock just heated screens without a frame themselves in a central store , they shipped it overnight and ready for me to pickup this morning! So that has only taken them Tuesday until this morning which I rate as good service?
Duckpit
Ah, didnt know that, mine was for S3 Lotus & never had one so OK with plain laminated, good luck
