Crossflow chain tensioner

PETER HERTS

Recommended Posts

I have decided to put a chain tensioner on my cross flow engine as I would love to get rid of that rattle when decelerating. I have a genuine Ford tensioner and pad albeit a single pad for a duplex chain but no fixings etc. The tensioner will need two bolts 5/16" unc, i have to measure the length but I've no idea about the pad as there seems to be no thread in the main cap. Could this be held on a rollpin or similar?

I have spent so much time on the internet to no avail. I'm hoping someone out there will know or have an exploded diagram showing all the parts of the engine.

It would be lovely to get the old engine running quieter and then I can hear myself singing joyfully along the country lanes.

Thanks. Peter

Hi Peter. I'll send you a PM later. I've got loads of xflow bits in the shed so I'm sure I'll have the parts you need, fixings etc. Just pay for postage. I've had mixed reports though on using a single width pad with a duplex chain. Some people say it's fine, actually preferred over using the double width pad that Burton's etc supply because of their poor quality. But others have said it's not recommended to use the single width.

Thanks Roger. The only problem is that a double pad has been on order from Burtons for months originally promised the end of this year but again delayed. Not sure for how long. I can report that the engine was originally built by yourself and still going strong after 31 years. That say's a lot about your engineering expertise. Thanks, Peter

Unfortunately I'm getting no reply from their phone but I suspect you are right. I have put one on order from Burton's and in the meantime I will use a single pad. Hopefully only for a few months. I'll try ringing them again in New Year and let you know if I'm lucky. Happy new year to everyone and thanks for all your replies. Peter
