Crossflow Starter Motor

Recommended Posts

So the car is a 1997 1.7 Ford crossflow with an Odyssey PC680  battery and the starter motor struggles to start the car.

I've just removed the starter which looks like a standard pre engaged starter (although is does have "high power" written in marker pen ).

Which starter motor do you think I should be fitting and from where should I be buying it?

Thanks in advance for your comments

How about getting it repaired? Many Members seem happy with that and you know it will fit when it goes back.

PS: If it wasn't out already I'd do the following:

  1. Check that it's getting enough smoke to make it spin as it should. What's the battery voltage at rest, minimum during struggling, and at 3,000 rpm?
  2. Once those are known to be good check all the wires and connections, including the earths. Wiggle, disconnect and clean.
  3. That still leaves the starter solenoid as a potential problem. Rig a temporary switched bypass wire to the solenoid terminal on the starter and see if that makes a difference.

Ahh... So it's a Pinto starter that fits not a crossflow one.

That make a bit of sense because all the crossflow ones appear to be 9 tooth, 2 bolt and for a 110 tooth ring gear. Where the one I've taken off is 10 tooth, 3 bolt and the ring gear has 130+ teeth.

Yup, mine was 3 bolts, 10 tooth. I seem to remember the cog on the replacement look slightly shorter than the older one, but works fine. Thinking about it, after 20 years of use in the hottest part of the engine bay (exhaust is near it) it has a tough life... I wrapped my replacement in a heat reflective cover. Probably no need as I'm happy to buy a new one every 20 years...

The difference in spin up was marked, went from a 'will it or won't it' at the risk of draining the battery to 'whoooooompffffff'.

i think a year ago there was a thread on this, another member did the same as me at the same time with the same unit and supplier.

Hi

Fitted a high torque one to my crossflow, bit of a faf counting teeth numbers etc and not cheap, however it was awesome and never had any issues.

Sorry cant remember where i got it but suspect a quick google will resolve.

Cheers

I too replaced a rather sleepy std xflow starter with the Pinto starter motor that Stridey and Johnathan mention above http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271765788262

Delighted with the performance of the thing. Engine spools up beautifully. To add to it it all its even lighter than the original motor by about a kilo. All in all a great value starter that packs a real punch *thumbup*
