Cruise control

Anyone fitted it to a seven?

This was asked on Petrolheads forum by someone else and they thought it was mad.

I don't fit in the car, never have, and so my accelerator leg tends to give up after 100 miles. I am trying to use the car before I finally sell it and think a retrofit cruise control would work to get me along the motorway.

I built a crude one for my SV, but it works great. My ankle and foot get tired on long drives, and this thing really helps. It is just a long tube that connects to the gas pedal and fits between the seat and transmission tunnel. I put a handle on the end of it to make it easier to crab. You can use your hand to control it or the side of your leg.

Hand throttles used to be standard on various European cars. But they have two differences from modern cruise controls:

  1. They don't control speed when the load varies.
  2. They don't relinquish control when the brake pedal (?etc) is pressed.

Does not having the second cause problems in practice?

Used to have hand throttles on my Lancias - can't say I ever used them though.

I assume everyone knows the pedals can be moved - three different pivot points.   And it's dead easy to bend the pedal to wherever makes it most suitable, likewise the other pedals if needed.

Just make sure you adjust the cables or brake link rod to suit to, to minimse wear and tear.

My ankle used to get tired after several hours on the autobahn etc - never sits at that angle for so long in the UK.
