Diff removal (BMW)

Drive shafts and A Frame out first. Best to remove diff and carrier together.  Leave the long top bolt in until last and support the diff throughout the process from underneath. You’ll need a long drift bar to ease the top bolt out.  Best suggestion is to get Jonathan to supply you with the relevant build manual.  This will also help for centering the diff and reassembly.  Just a quick question

So I’ve just put the car up on axle stands and looking to remove the diff.  Once I’ve removed the brake caliper, is it easier to remove the four bolts holding the de-dion ears to the tube and remove the whole hub assembly with the drive shafts as one unit.

Yes. You can remove the brake disc and hub, deDion ear and drive shaft as one without undoing the 41mm nuts. I use a trolley Jack under the diff with a 200mm square bit of plywood on the pad ... enables you to lower the diff single handed after removing all fasteners.
