Emerald K6

I am running with Jenvey DTH bodies so I have no idle stabilization valve.

The K6 has the facility to raise the cold idle speed by using ignition timing, has anybody succeeded in getting this to work. I cannot seem to get my car to idle when cold it just cuts out, it's fine once warmed up and has a very stable idle once up to temperature.

Yes I have looked at that, to be honest I'm not sure if it is working correctly. Once warmed up it's fine even if you put a load on the engine it's tick over is stable. I was just wondering if anyone has a car that has a fast idle on cold startup?

If I advance the ignition I can get the cold idle speed to increase and it will tick over, but if I allow the K6 to make the adjustments it stalls. I'm probably doing something wrong.

I’m going back quite a few years but I advanced the ignition with the K6 feature when cold. It worked very well and exactly as expected on mine (standard 1800K, SS cams and Jenvey DTH TBs). I think it’s the only way to get a stable idle when cold with that setup. Is the ECU reading the correct engine temperature?

To make my car able to idle when cold I had to open up the throttles which then made it idle around 1200RPM when hot at a decent air fuel ratio. You can of course make it idle slower, but the AFR will be crazy.

In an ideal world you'll make something that can add a little air when the engine is cold. This could be an IACV or something as simple as a solenoid that just actuates the throttle ever so little, which could be operated from an output simply gated by the water temperature.

Or you could go the full way and make it drive by wire which is what I do on the 1.9K with 2180/1444 cams.

If you set the airflow to 5.5kg/hr and the idle advance to zero, that will give sufficient air for a good cold idle without the idle racing when the engine is hot. Do make sure the cold start fuel corrections are right and that idle stabilisation is turned on and that the TPS threshold is actually reached. I have never yet had a TB’d engine that didn’t idle properly when cold and that is out fo around 250. It just needs some careful adjustments to fuelling , airflow and TPS alignment.

Dave,

I've been fiddling around with this for years and at less than 6kg/hr it won't idle for the first 10 seconds or so. Anything from then no problem. And yes, I've been very very very careful about any alignment.

I suspect though that it also may have to do with cam timing which in my case is more about power than torque.

Thank's Oily it works, I don't think I went through the process methodically enough before and probably missed something out.The cold fast idle is working a treat. Is it worth enabling the O2 sensor? I don't have a catalyst
