Finger filter removal

Guys,

Another query regarding my oil change.   I've drained the dry sump tank, and removed the oil filter.  

I'm now looking to remove and clean the finger filter.  I've removed the small hex bolt which holds it in place, the cover now rotates by a few degrees but I can't pull it out.  I can't rotate too far as the sump guard is in the way, the black wedge thingy.  

Do I need to exert more force ? or do I have to take the sump guard off and rotate it further around?

A thin screwdriver or thin plastic blade carefully inserted under the edge is needed to "pop" the cover off against the 'O' ring holding it in place. I've done this about 10 times now and reused the 'O' ring (carefully examining it each time for damage and smearing with oil before re-insertion). I put some blue loctite on the screw for re-insertion and torque it to 9Nm. Bearing in mind that this is the return oil feed that has very little pressure, an 'O' ring leak would cause only slight seepage.

Thanks, I used a Draper trim removal tool in the end, the construction was plastic, but good an strong and the perfect size.

Appreciate the torque setting, I was wondering.

Finger filter was totally clean too, no traces of rubber or other rubbish.

I changed the oil at 1000, 2000 and annually thereafter in my car since June 15. 

There’s never been any contamination of any kind in the finger filter but it’s important to remove it because there’s quite a lot of oil that drains from there. 

The first time, I undid the low ends of the oil hoses but very little came out so now I extract from the tank and drain from the main filter and finger filter. 

I measure what comes out, as near as I can, and put back in the same amount. I put the filter on empty but disconnect the inertia switch and crank over a few times before starting.

I'm assuming Oakmere did an oil change at 1000 miles, I've now done one at 2000 miles.  Mileage and age will probably influence the next, I suspect 12 months will go by before I get over 6000 miles, so it will be an annual type oil change.  That said I might do an additional change to swap to a better oil filter since the FRAM is so poorly thought of.

I bought myself a vacuum pump from Screwfix to extract the oil from the tank, it was simple enough. the rest pretty much came out of the finger filter aperture.  Just over 2 litres came out that way, only downside was some of the oil ran around the aperture and between the sump guard and engine, its been slowly dripping since.  I'm not starting the car until I'm confident I've removed all of the mess, I don't want to miss a possible oil leak from either filter.  

next up, inspect the diff and clunk, plus oil change in the diff.
