Fitting a boot cover.

Recommended Posts

The boot cover on my 1994 S3, standard roll bar is showing its age.

I've looked at Oxted Thundersports web site and they supply the boot cover and a tool/fittings.

1. Is it an easy job?

2. How do I work around the harnesses bolts?

3. What, if any, pitfalls do I need to avoid?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Some of the build manuals have the install details. I have harnesses and first thing the manual tells you to do is cut a hole in your new boot cover and remove the flat aluminium plate inside the seam. Harness bolts are then punched through the vinyl.

The tricky bit is marking where to fit the poppers on the new cover to match those on the back panel. I used masking tape on the inside of the cover pressed onto the popper base to give the mark. Fitted one at a time to aid placement.

The absolutely essential thing is to fit it on a sunny day or in a warm workshop then the cover will be (almost) as tight as a drum.(assuming vinyl rather than mohair)

When I had mine fitted by SBFS they used a white chalk pencil on the existing popper, pulled the cover over to the correct position and rubbed the cover from the outside to make a chalk circle on the inside. Then punch the hole in the centre of the chalk circle. Fit the popper and move to the next one.  I think they started from the middle and worked outwards to keep it taught.

Hope this helps
