pete_h
I'm lucky enough to have the freestyle suspension on my car - the wide version not the ultra wide. Does anyone have the install guide? Also - are the wishbones the same as standard? If not, I beleive they are made by Arch? Just thinking ahead...
Tazio
No guide I am afraid, but I have a full set of Freestyle front suspension and shockers in a box in the loft, you can use the standard widetrack bottom wishbones , top wishbones are different and come without the socket for the standard arb. Arch make all the bits. I struggled getting an appropriate ride height/ droop set up on my VX, tried alternative length pushrods and both 6 and 7 inch springs but in the end took it all off, as for me the benefits ( better turn in ) were not worth to me compromise in ride, for what is purely a road car. Tazio
Oops , I do have a Guide. PM me your email and I'll send it over. Alan
Tony Whitley
There are photos of the guide in Freestyle Caterhams | Facebook If you are FB-averse then I can copy them to BC.Arch have the pattern and were able to make a new ultrawide wishbone for my car. pete_h
Thanks both. I'll take a look at the fb page. Tony - is it possible to convert to the ultra wide? I know it would mean a CV rear end, but I'm working on that thanks to Covid snacking ;-) Would it be worth it?
Tony Whitley
Possible certainly but whether it's worth the effort... ISTR that A Certain Very Self-Opinionated Former Member had ultra wide front suspension with standard rear.
rgrigsby
Hi Pete, I have this setup on my car, I don't have the build guide but if you need some photos an actual install let me now and I can take some.FWIW for me it was an excellent upgrade, improved turn in and I found the general body control was a lot better, previously my car tended to ground out but since fitting this I hardly ever hit the ground even though the base ride height is set the same.ThanksRobert
7 wonders of the world
I have it too standard wide trackWishbones are dimensionally the same although Gary's original's were aero profile without the crossbrace.Gary also placed the pick up point for the push rod on top of the wishbone however speaking with him he said using the normal thro the wishbone pick up on the normal widetrack was fine as the distance was negligible.Top aero wishbone were made without the arb socket although Bruce made me a pair of standard ones without these too.I powerflexed and rose jointed the whole set up - as previously mentioned the dive thro the travel on the stock set up no longer occurs as the travel ratio is correct. If you your looking to use AVO dampers make sure you ask them for to build them for Freestyle inboard as opposed to normal Freestyle - the results are significantly different !! BM me if you need any details as the front is off mine currently so photos and dimensions are esy to get.
pete_h
Thanks all. I've taken the dampers off mine to send to Avo for a service. Still have to get the rears out... Is the initial setup in the guide 'close enough'? The springs will have to be removed for the rebuild. I've only had the freestyle on the car, and the old tyres were probably tired (ho ho) but I found that it understeered a lot when I did a driver training day at North Weald. At least it looks easy enough to adjust.
Tazio
Did you measure everything before you removed the fronts? platform height, spring length, then you have a starting point when you reassemble.
pete_h
I've not taken the springs off, but yes - I will be (and thanks for reminding me to do it).
7 wonders of the world
What car and engine do you have and what springs are currently on ...?
pete_h
I have an R400 k-series. The front springs say 'FREESTYLE WHITE' so no idea what that equates to. Not got to the back yet (still looking for a 12v led baton to light my garage...).
7 wonders of the world
It will more than likely be engraved on the ends of the coils visible once the coils are removed.
Area Representative gileshudson Posted January 22, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted January 22, 2021 The extra-wide version setup is called 'Freestyle Supawide' to distinguish it from 'Freestyle Wide' And yes, it is spelt like that :O)

pete_h
Thanks for the info Aeroscreens. I shall print that off too I now have the rears out, so can send them off for service. However, I don't have a C spanner of the right size to take the springs off.I notice that the rears have poly bushes rather than the spherical bearings on the front. Any point in having them converted (if possible)? I have now spent more time in the garage working on the car than I did driving it last year - and I am enjoying it! Tazio
Leave them with polybushes, you'd only need to get some tophats made to fit any sperical bearings so that eveything fits the mounts, so what's to gain?
pete_h
That was the question really - what do I gain? Zero slop, but I suspect I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway!
7 wonders of the world
Anything that removes parasitic stiction from the suspension and permits free reign for the spring and dampers to fulfill their roles unhindered is a benefit.
