Front registration plate fixings?

Evening All,

Could I just double check owners simply stick their front registration plates directly onto the nose cone with suitable adhesive tape.  I've searched and found a couple of discussions on the topic which mention the tape, but no bracket designed to provide a flat mating surface for the plate?  Is this correct, straight onto the nose?

I've finally got my test date sorted, it's the end of March.  So in theory if she passes, I'll take my pre-prepared plates, plus paperwork and registered her immediately after the test, sticking the plates on in the test center park, ready to drive away taxed, tested and insured!

I used double sided tape for 8 years, but got fed up half ripping it off with my trouser leg in my tiny garage! This winter I drilled a couple of holes and used white plastic number plate bolts for extra security *smile*

Yeah it's pretty good here.

I went up to the test centre yesterday and chatted to the staff, we sorted the paperwork and date, plus paid for the test.  I got confirmation of a normal registration too, i.e. not a q plate.

I now just need to take it up at the end of March, the duration of the test is around 3hours.   If it passes I can do the registration paperwork immediately at the centre, they can issue the tax disc there an then.  I'll just get the log book in the post.  I hope it passes first time, so I can drive it back.

At the moment the only complexity I have is that my insurer won't cover me for the drive to the test centre as the car isn't registered.  I'm therefore trying to find a solution taking it there and picking it up if it fails.  Local recovery firms quoted 50+vat or 90+vat to transport the car, but the cheaper is used extensively by the Police to recover RTA, which take priority.  In the event an RTA occurs and they're pulled on to that I may forfeit my test etc. Not good.

High strength velcro to attach the front plate. Screw it or glue it & you could find the bottom of the nose cone ripped off if for any reason the number plate is hit or grounded.

As mentioned providing the chassis number to the insurance provider should cover the return journey to the test centre & indeed until receipt of the registration mark.

I insured the car using Cherished Vehicle Insurance Services / A-Plan, I found the advert in the club magazine so went with them.  I thought it would be a good strategy since they were bothering to advertise in the club's magazine and also showed a graphic of a 7.  I was also super impressed with the price, ~300GBP for a 420R with 0 NCD.  However, they've refused to cover the car on the road based on the chassis, only in my garage during build etc.   The car will only be covered for driving on the road once registered.  They've explicitly stated a journey to the test center is not covered.

My recent trip to SCP was £60, and I expect to outlay another £60 to collect it tomorrow too.

It would be good to sort a better solution for my test date.

If anyone thinks I'm being given erroneous information by Cherish Vehicle Services based on experience please let me know.

sounds a little odd, unless its specific to the IOM..?

I certainly insured mine on the VIN to drive to IVA, but only to and from test, they were specific in that I could not drive from the test to the then DVLA centre in order to register, I had to go home.

Might be worth giving Carlie and BM here details are halfway down this thread

Also consider a smaller front plate 9"x3" - which is a standard bike size, technically you do not conform to traffic regs however they'd be hard pushed since its acceptable on a bike - providing of course your font and spacing is correct.

and as others have said 3M dual lock is great just a couple of small squares does the job, you can get Dual lock in different strengths 140 up to 300 - the more 'mushrooms' on the tape the stronger the hold

I'm insured with A Plan and they gave me cover to drive to and from the test centre based on the VIN number. They issued specific docs to do this so that, if stopped, I could evidence insurance.

If it had failed, but not for a dangerous fault, I could have driven home.

After the test I just called them with the registration number and the policy was converted. All the above within the std policy cost.
