David Brown
That would have been easy, and saved a failed joint on my CSR, if CC hadn't covered the propshaft with a plate held in by 34 pop rivets.
Beagler
Could the the rivets not be replaced with screws and trap-nuts or self tappers.
David Brown
Yes, easy to do but if you don't know the grease nipples are there as you can't see them and later cars have greased for life joints then you don't know that you're meant to drill them out every year. 7 wonders of the world
Assume the plate runs on the bottom of the tunnel...? so you should be able to make a suit 25mm hole in this panel to permit greasing without the need to remove the plate
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted August 16, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted August 16, 2021 There was a period where prop shaft UJs did not posses grease points so be prepared for a surprise!I do know grease points were possibly fitted to UJs up to about 2007. On from then not sure but I can state unequivocally that my 2012 car does not have them. I believe that UJ grease points were reinstated at some point in the near past - 2015 > ?? ScottR400D
Mine doesn't have them. As said before kit delivered Dec 14. When it was out last year because of the diff, the joints were both fine, though that was only at 8000 odd miles.
aerobod - near CYYC
No grease points on my 2012 R400D, either, but no issues at 34,000km.

John Vine
The front UJ on my 2008 R400D has a grease nipple. The rear UJ has the threaded hole but the nipple is missing. I only spotted this yesterday while under car cleaning the tunnel panels for my heat insulation kit. I assume there's supposed to be a nipple there? If so, can anyone suggest what size?JV
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 19, 2021 Member Share Posted August 19, 2021 1/4" UNF... or M6 1.0mm! How about removing the one that's there and measuring it?https://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/long-grease-nipple-prop-shaft-ujhttps://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/grease-nipple-snapped-propshaft-ujhttps://www.lotus7.club/forum/techtalk/standard-prop-uj-bearing-grease-nipple-threadJonathan
John Vine
Thanks, JK. You're a star. I'll measure the existing one.JV
David Brown
#8, yes could fit a large hole and fit a rubber bung but when I got the existing one refurbished I got greased for life uj's. Haven't yet got round to refitting the plate and will probably leave it for a winter job.
David Brown
P.s. doubt mine would have failed if one grease nipple hadn't fallen out.
7 wonders of the world
You need a long 1/4 UNF nipple Here you gohttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384304815855?ViewItem=&item=384304815855

John Vine
Well, this is truly bizarre...Before I proceeded to order a few 1/4" UNF long nipples, I thought I'd check by removing the front UJ nipple and trying it out on the rear. Apart from the fact that it's very awkward to get in there (there's a chassis cross-member partly in the way), I could not get it to fit. The nipple was definitely 1/4" UNF (28-pitch thread). So I tried an M6 x 1.0 screw, and it just slipped in. I went to put the nipple back in the front UJ, but could not get the thread to start. The reason was that the front UJ was also M6 x 1.0. Clearly, someone (not me guv) had jammed in the wrong nipple in the first place.I now have some M6 x 1.0 nipples on order.Incidentally, there's a big label stuck on the propshaft saying something like "Ensure regular greasing of this unit with a lithium-based grease".JV
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted August 21, 2021 Area Representative Share Posted August 21, 2021 'Incidentally, there's a big label stuck on the propshaft saying something like "Ensure regular greasing of this unit with a lithium-based grease".'And how many do practice the ritual of annual greasing ? That is if grease nipples are present. From listening to some owners the answer is never !! Which must make the prop shaft UJs some of the most 'reliable' components in a Seven that is until the inevitable happens.Any one had problems with the non grease nipple variety of UJ ? 7 wonders of the world
The quality of the joints used on my standard 2006 propshaft were described by the guy who looks after my prop as cheap sh1t, he replaced both ad rebalanced, my first prop supplied new lasted 6 months and both joints were shot when the prop was removed.I didn't pursue with CC as at best I'd get another prop with the same problem and I wanted the car on the road so had mine repaired while I waited.Considering the close proximity to your thighs and the devastation a broken prop will cause to you and the car I would keep an eye on them, or consider a prop gaurd. Roadsport06
I think it was JK that suggests taking the grease gun to the MOT as it means you do the greasing each year.
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 21, 2021 Member Share Posted August 21, 2021 Yes, but in my case... "they", as I'm up on the lift. And they have their own grease gun!:-)Jonathan
