half doors - hinges, fixings and solutions???

So I love my aero and love it even more with half doors.

I upgraded to a roadsport cage and wanted to put on side inpact protection - long story short, my R500 Chassis does not have the 3 point seat belt boss behind the seats that the inpact bars bolt to.

So my problem is - with the cage, aero and half doors all on - I am struggling to get in. The only way is to go in through the cage at the top - but the plan was to step on the side protection, up on to the cage and in trough the top. But I am a bit short to get onto the cage. The side protection was going to be my step.

Now I am thinking of how I can mount, maybe a hinge or other fixings to allow me to open the half door, get in normally and then 'shut' the half door.

Any suggestions on fixings that might work easily from the seat??

thanks

Nic

Is there a rear cage mount over the cill.....

If so you can do what I do and use a BMX stunt peg on the rear mount albeit mine is an SLR cage

I also mount my half doors (ABD ones from YC plastics) on the ouseside as you gain elbow room

with them being ABS you can id required trim and bend the leading edge with a little hot air so you can tuck it under the scuttle if you prefer.

That's a 'rear wheel intrusion bar'. I had one fitted when I had a full cage, if it has a suitable band of grip tape around the centre of the tube it does work as a suitable step to gain some height for entry. I did however mostly go in through the side, out through the top.

Hi Nic,

As per our message exchange on Instagram (chrisl3ete) here's what I've been working on - but appreciate it's not designed for aero screen fitment, but I think it'd be pretty simply to apply the same principle as mounting the hinge to the A-Pillar or Roll Cage would have the same effect.

Thank you Mrp.

I'm presently spraying up the white 3D printed parts, in readiness to add to the car for first trackday on 26th April @ Bedford.

If any L7C members want to emulate this design then I'm more than happy to share the 3D CAD files that I designed, plus a parts list ie nuts and bolts.

The only other two main parts are the doors - I got mine from Steve at YC Plastics (steve@ycplastics.co.uk), he's recently done a new batch of black half doors.

And the 2x hinges are basic trestle table / paste board hinges, two example sources being;

Yes it needs to be perspex not acrylic for ease of bending with hot air gun. Hinges ali. blocks....mirrors from local bike shop.....nylon turn catch at the bottom....mornings work in the shed

Mk 2 about to be made with forward extensions and more air gap

Made an aero screen at the same time........much better than std. screen and performance noticeably better

Hi Tazio,

Yes, appreciate it may be deemed "Over The Top".
My main reasoning for making the half doors "moveable" was to assist my children getting in and out with ease.
I had initially started with a design where the doors would hinge open as per the standard full doors.
Then someone suggested they could be like "lambo doors" - and I like a challenge :D

Hi Alan,
I now see where you are coming from, LOL.
In fairness they are not that little any more, being 9, 11 and 12 - and I just happen to be turning 44 this week.
Which makes me wonder - what the average age of L7C membership is.
