Handbrake Cable Rubber Boots

Recommended Posts

The rubber boots on the caliper ends of my handbrake cable are completely perished to the point of being a row of separate crumbling rubber rings.

While I've got things in pieces, should I:

  1. Replace the handbrake cable (which is otherwise in good condition).
  2. Replace the rubbers (and if so, where can I get them from and will they stretch over then end fitting OK?)
  3. Just get rid of the old rubbers and run without.

Thanks,

Andrew.

The handbrake cable is a Ford Sierra item. The rubbers are not available separately. Bought myself some of these off eBay for £1.65. Mountain Bike Brake Cable Noodles.

Sprayed a little silicone lubricant onto a pair of long nosed pliers, slotted them on and stretched them out. Poked the handbrake cable eye up through the middle and after some very tight wriggling and poking (luckily they are made of rubber which stretches a long way without any tendency to tear, like a balloon) ...

... perfect fit!
