Help with 13 inch wheels please

Bleaky

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Please can the collect wisdom here help me with sizing a second pair of wheels for my (new to me) Superlight R?

Currently the tyres I have are Avon CR500, front 175/55 R13, rear 205/55 R13 on split rims.

I want to use my 7 for autosolos and these Avons are not legal for the events because autosolos don’t allow Motorsport UK ‘List 1B’ tyres.

Therefore, I’d like a second set of 13 inch dia wheels.  Some tyres I have found that would be autosolo legal are:

Nankang NA1 rear 205/60 R13 that will fit a 5.5-7.5 inch rim and 175/60 R13 for 4.5-6 inch width rims.  I don’t know if they are any good…..

What I would like to ask is where I can get some wheels that will fit and particularly what offset they need to be for my car?  The current wheels don’t have any markings on them to give me a clue.

I’d be happy with second hand wheels so long as they are decent condition.  There are folks on eBay selling new Minilight style wheels, but I don’t know what offset to ask for.

Many thanks all.

Dave

I see you have a Superlight R so the standard rims are 6.5" and 8.5".

From the archives the fronts are +18mm and the rears +23mm.  However I found this from a post in 2002.  I have some SLR K&N split rims in the garage if you want any further measurements.  I may even consider selling them but depends on where you are located.

Offsets were researched when we were trying to put together the recent Ultralite Bulk purchase. Caterham and Mike Barnaby confrirmed that the 6" & 6.5" both had +18mm and the 8.5" +23mm. Now the tricky part is you can measure a dozen different wheels and get a different back depth on each. Backdepth is from the inner edge of the rim to the mounting flange and this is down to how the edge of the spun rim is finished. Also what you have to bear in mind is that as an example a 6" rim refers to the width of the tyre bead sealing faces and not the overall width of the rim which will be around 7" for a 6J wheel. Confused I hope not.

Dave,

I was told below 200hp, 6" rims and 185/60 was all you needed. Wouldn't extra width on the rear inhibit progress?

I think a cheap set of 6x13" minilights would be worth looking into - I've seen them as cheap as £120 a set.

When I was at Parker Racing last week checking out seats for a fellow member they had stacks of minilights outside - maybe worth a call?

If your looking for light wheels speak to Warren @ Revolution extremely helpful when I bought mine and we have a club discount set up with them too.

I run 4 spoke Race versions  6.5" fronts, 8" rear

Since I have a little more time at the moment......., I thought I’d conclude this thread with the outcome in case it helps folk in the future wishing to buy wheels.

At the recommendation of Neil (7 Wonders), I went to Revolution Wheels and can highly recommend this company: Warren was superb to deal with, including being extremely knowledgeable.

So, after discussion with Warren, I went with the following:

Front:

13 x 6.5; ET 24

The full details are: 13 x 6.5 4 Spoke race ET 24 4-108/63.5 M'blk HR-Caterham, c4.3kg each

Rear:

13 x 7.0 ET 00

The full details are: 13 x 7.0 4 Spoke race ET 00 4-108/63.5 M'blk HR-Caterham; c4.6kg each

I had to balance the width of the rear wheel with available non-list 1B (Motorsport UK) tyres- there isn’t much choice for 13 inch diameter.  Warren recommended the above rim widths for the tyres I went with.

Those tyres were Nankang Econex NA-1 175/60 R13 front and 205/60 R13 rear.

List 1B tyres are illegal for autosolos, hence my need for others, which constrained my choice.

I’m very happy indeed with the wheels.  The tyres seem OK too, clearly not as grippy as the CR500 tyres on my other wheels, which are illegal for autosolo.  Nevertheless, these Nankang tyres seem fine.

I hope this info helps others in the future.
