jonathantennantbtinternet
My primary pipe that is closest to the bulkhead seems very close to the solenoid of the starter motor. Checking out other 7's there appears to be better clearance as the pipe has a better design . I've got a 4-1 collector outside the skin and all 4 primaries are not connected to each other . TomB
Different type of starter motors have their solenoid in different places. The original starter on my 1996 1.4 engine had the solenoid on top, very close to the manifiold. Its been some years since I had it, but I recall it was no more than a 1cm, potentially less. Due to multiple starting problems, including K click, burnt/old cables, tired relay and possible heat affected solenoid, I changed the starter to the later model with the underslung solenoid, well away from the manifold. You can buy a non OEM starter that can rotate and position the solenoid more or less whereever you want to put it.
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted June 18, 2019 Leadership Team Share Posted June 18, 2019 Jonathan, what age is the car? My 1995 car had a 4-1 like you describe which was very close to the starter motor, my 1999 car has very different primaries (4-2-1) which seem to have a more convoluted design to primary no.4 to give better clearance. Also the 1995 primaries existed the side skin at a downward angle whereas the 1999 version exits horizontally (but still swept back).Stu. jonathantennantbtinternet
Thanks guys, TomB don't suppose you know the part number for the later starter motor
TomB
‘Fraud not, but these might help. These are the later K series starter with underslung solenoid. One is Magnetron, one is Magnetti Marelli but I can’t remember which is which. There are a number of aftermarket ones like Brise & Powerlite. http://www.alcester-racing-sevens.com/starter_maintenance.htm http://www.alcester-racing-sevens.com/removal_of_solenoid.j
