RogerB
Having reset my valve clearances by grinding the shims down on an oil stone would it be a good idea to re-case harden the shims again. I was taught how to case harden steel many years ago as an apprentice by heating until cherry red then submerging in carbon powder. I cant find any examples of this method on the internet.Would this method be appropriate for the valve shims.

oilyhands
Heating and immersing in oil usually does the same. The shims I have made are silver steel and are through hardened so when ground you don't break through the hardened layer. If you know the sizes you need I may be able to supply ones that require little or no adjustment. I have a reasonably large stock holding from 110 thou to 160.Oily
