Master Cylinder Options

The list of stuff to do is ever growing!

When moving the car a couple of weeks ago, I found the brake pedal was decidedly spongey after being stood since the end of September. The same happened last winter and bleeding the brakes sorted it out. Over the previous 17 winters the brakes were fine after a 6 month lay up so me thinks something is amiss with the master cylinder.

So weighing up the options:-

1) Seal kit from Redline, though I've had mixed results using seal kits on other cars. Will the bores need honing? Anything to watch out for?

2) Fit the post 2007 master cylinder - assuming it is a direct swap for the pre 2007 M/C?

3) Spend a bit more and fit the AP uprated version. I read this needs a greater prod for the same brake effort. Anyone regret fitting one?

Brakes are standard all round - iron 2 pots up front with mintex pads and sierra calipers at the back with original pads. No visible leaks.

Regards

Ian

Well, took it off today and got it all apart. The bores have some scoring so looks like its a new unit.

FYI you have to take the reservoir off to remove a pin to release the rear piston. There is a large spring behind this piston so expect it to come out with some force and a small amount of brake fluid. If you're not expecting this, the piston goes a long way and so does the brake fluid. Fortunately not over the cars but just waiting to see if brake fluid damages freezer enamel *whistle*

Not figured out how to take the front piston assembly apart to change the seals but sort of irrelevant now. Anyone know for reference?

The seal kit from Redline looks right apart from the reservoir to body seals - the kit has 2 seals the same whereas mine uses one of these and the other is more like a square section o ring. I'll call them and check.

Finally, has anyone converted theirs to separate master cylinders and a balance bar?

Quiet a few of us have dual master cylinders with a balance bar.

If you decide to go down this route, I have a pair of Willwood mcs with integral resevoirs. One 3/4" other 5/8", that you could have. ( donation to NtL? )

Clive.
