noisy transmission on overrun

As a recent returnee to the world of 7’ing I had forgotten about the noises, bangs, pops, whines, drones etc.

Whilst the drone and whine in 4th and 5th are tiresome at 40-60mph, the rest of the noise I actually quite like. Well, apart from the squeal of the brakes when going slowly/in traffic, which makes a fairly conspicuous mode of transport even more so!

On my future, when there’s a few spare quid, maybe, possibly someday if I can ever afford it list, will be a straight cut gearset to make it even noisier!

That said, as much as I love it, still sounds like something is going to fall off or break every time I drive it! But in the 700 or so miles I’ve done in the last 5 weeks, nowt has yet so happy days!

Current solution...........select second gear, make the shift lights dance and then I can’t hear anything but the glorious shriek of K series goodness. Sorted

I have been mucking about with different oil in my BMW diff since new to ameliorate the noise.

First: Halfords 80w90 GL5 with the friction additive - not too bad.

Second: After changing the diff output seals Comma LSD 80w90. A tad noisier especially when hot.

I am going to install Castrol Syntrax 75w140  during the winter service. Apparently this oil is 'recommended' for BMW LSDs.

For Sierra Diffs (why did I originally put Type 9!)  any good 80w90 or EP90 is ok. For Sierra Diff LSD I believe that Castrol 373 is recommended.

For clarification here Ford Type 9 is a gearbox not a Final Drive, the alloy Final Drive used on De Dion cars prior to the new heavier cast iron BMW lump is a 7" Sierra unit, the gear oil for this should reflect the type of differential within, open, Quaiffe ATB, or an LSD.

Most plate LSD require a friction reduction additive to reduce plate chatter at slow speeds.
