Pagid RS15/RS14

I spoke to John at Performance Braking on Monday and took his advice and went for a set of Pagid RS15 front pads and RS14 rear pads, to replace my standard pads all round (normal rear calipers, AP fronts). I cringed at the cost but needed a solution to the fairly dire track performance of the standard setup.

Anyway, after a few evenings of fiddling I've just been out for the bed-in and testing...

OH MY GOD

Simply astonishing braking power. Much easier to lock up now but all part of the learning curve. Had a few times where I got it just right and it felt like my face was coming off. Very very very very impressed, despite the cost!! I seem to have a very large amount of dust on the front wheels though... normal for these pads?

Huge thumbs up, cannot recommend these pads and Performance Braking enough 😬

I use the same combination on my R500 and balance is excellent with superb bite from cold and with no fade. They may cost more but the bouns is they last forever *thumbup*

I think the brakes are just as important as an extra few bhp but owners seem more inclined to invest in power upgrades and seem reluctant to invest in the best brake pads *confused*

One thing to be wary of, as I've recently discovered, is don't let the pads rust onto the disks.

I don't know whether the Pagids are more susceptible than other types but my car had gathered dust in the garage over the winter so I washed it and dried off the body but, being cold, the brakes remained wet. Over a period of no more than a couple of weeks, the front pads rusted onto the disks. Expecting them to free themselves in the normal way and with the car jacked up, I gave the wheels a yank. Where the pads had rusted to the disk, the pad surface has torn quite badly and had to be scraped off the disk. I've yet to inspect the pads fully to see whether they need to be replaced. If they do, it'll be an expensive lesson.

Have been using RS14 Pagids for years and they are great and do last a very long time BUT I did have one prob. The left front brake disc cracked at Magny Cours GP circuit (alot of braking on this circuit). It was a full thickness crack but disc stayed intact. Touch wood, I've stayed with RS14's and had no recurrence of this for about 4 years. On my third set now. Maybe the disc was faulty, but worth having a look at them every now and then.

OAP: Maybe the pads have become glazed? Wouldn't hurt to emery the discs and pads and bed them in again perhaps.

Talking of cracks, I noticed a few in the standard Lucas pads that I removed from my rear calipers. Not sure how they'd have coped towards the end of their lifespan...

I have had a bit of squeal from mine today at low speed, not bothered by it really, all the best cars have brakes that squeal (i.e. rally cars) *smile*

In any case it's not very significant yet.

I'm interested in more details about how long they last - number of track days, etc. My R400 EATS rear pads. They only last 2 track days before being near the metal. As you can guess, it's getting boring ordering them in bulk and changing them.

I have heard from experienced owners that the 15's are too hard for the fronts and we caterhams dont get enough heat in them in general track and road use.

I had 14's on front and blues on rear - that was a nice combo.

But not as good as my present ferrodo fronts *tongue*
