Paint And Petrol

Two totally separate questions

1st one

As you may have read in my previous rants  I had a horrendously bad respray on the car and so it needs redoing

It is now becoming a rather expensive undertaking so I have to get it right this time round.

I want a Firecracker yellow but the paint shop cant seem to get the mix correct I have the paint code from Caterham but unfortunately is is not working out.(just looks to mustard)

Please do not say "just find another paint shop" as in Florida a good one is hard to find and this one does excellent work and I trust them to do the job right.

Can anyone enlighten me as to who Caterham sub contracts the painting of their cars? As I was hoping to get a quart, pint or even better enough to paint the complete car from them in a Fire Cracker Yellow?

#2

In Florida a new (to Florida) petrol company has started to spring up WAWA dunno who came up with the name and although the best octane is still only 93 they offer an "Ethanol free gas" that is more expensive.

My car runs on 100 octane I am going to use pump gas and an octane booster. (100 Octane is 11 bucks a gallon and only available at the track) Is there a + to using  "Ethanol free gas?

(I have a high compression Zetec 2.0)

Is there a + to using  "Ethanol free gas?

  1. It won't absorb water. This is usually only a problem if fuel is left where it can get wet for a long time.
  2. Some polymers including some rubbers deteriorate when exposed to ethanol. But the appropriate resistant materials have been specified and available for automotive use for a few decades.

To avoid a long winded explanation can you find out what brand of paint, layering system, and what technology family your paint shop is trying to match the colour with?

Re fuel what price is 100ll Avgas from your friendly FBO at your local airstrip.

Doesn't your paint job has a book with general colors ? in the day it used to be a book with colors that have a hole in the middle. Or just go to the paint shop take your time and go trough their swatch collection as per make to find the color you like.

BTW Porsche claim that their " special" yellow with a layer of clearcoat between bascoat with metallic and second coat metallic has a deeper effect, even with 2 or 3 layers af clearcoat in between mettalic's it doesn't make any difference.

On the petrol:

... a waste of money?

I don't know what your engine needs and what's available.

The water absorption can be obviated by keeping as little as you need in the conditions where it's at risk.

The deterioration of polymers... hmmmm. For a long time mainstream manufacturers have been using products that can withstand high concentrations of ethanol. But the risk is much higher for anyone making specialist parts at low volumes: they might use the wrong stuff. That could affect older Sevens. And on top of that there is the sheer age of many of our cars.

(There are a couple of examples where ethanol has been suspected as the cause for problems in the fuel systems of Sevens: some tank gaskets, and recently some clips in the float assembly IIRC. I'm not convinced.)
