Quaife 7 speed feedback ?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking moving to a sequential gearbox ( plus a flatshift solution).

I know several people using the Sadev 6 but don't know anybody who is using the quite new (and cheaper) Quaife 7 speed.

Would someone share his experience fitting and using this 7speedgearbox ?

(My Caterham has an imperial small body with a 2.0 L Duratec producing 224hp).

We are running a 89G (7 speeder) in a race R400 1.8 K virtually the same size as a type 9 and at 33kg is 5kg lighter than the 60G. 7th gear is 0.920. A handy box for a high reving low torque engine. We 🥰 it. AP Racing have designed and supplied a 5.5"clutch plate which we are testing which can take the down shift loads ok which will be available very soon.

I never knew that Gerry *wavey*

It is quite a bit cheaper than the Sadev and with the extra gear really has to be a better option than any six speed *wink* Must admit this is probably the route I am going *cool*

Gerry I will be sending you an email for a bit more *smokin*

Cheers

Ian

Never any posts about the Elite 6 speed IL200 box, its much lighter 22Kg and half the price of the Quaife at £3600. I know that the very early boxes gave trouble especially when used with the electric solenoid shifter but I have been told that the box is now sorted and really good value. Simon Rogers ran one for years perhaps he can comment.

Quoting Catastrada:
I guess you are using a 3,62 final ratio?

What tyres are you using and what is your max speed please?

Plenty of gear calculators on line but,We change diff depending on the circuit either 3.62 or 3.91,Tyres ZZR in A60 compound 560mm, Max speed on data so far is 215 kph at Castle Combe going over the crest into Quarry with the 3.62

We are still using a stick shift, No flappy paddles as yet

Not sure the 7 speeder will be any good on a big duratec though

The Elite IL200 is a very cost efective way of getting into a seq, And yes there has been problems in the past. Mostly sorted now i believe.

As allways you get what you pay

I used the Elite ILS200 6 speed in my last race Caterham, in fact it's still in there. It never missed a beat for me over 4.5 year period, but Rob they don't like heavy handed use *wink*

Closer ratios will always offer more speed irrespective of engine torque, Gerry there is a few in the Mags using this with Duratec power *wink* But your right the Quaife is more than the Elite for a reason 😶‍🌫️

I have been using a Elite IL200 6 speed for this season for track days mated to a 1.9 k Series with a very light sub 2kg Flywheel i had made and a 5.5' twin plate clutch from super clutch, Simon at Meteor worked out all the ratio's for me.

Its a tight fit with the reverse leaver it didn't help that they supplied it with the wrong input shaft length but once that was sorted it went in ok

I fitted an oil temp gauge to make sure it doesn't over heat, The transmission tunnel is open

passed the hand break to help ventilation and i change the oil every other track day. pendennis recommended fitting a catch tank for the breather that was a simple job.

were pleased with the results its an idea combination for a our K series engine.

There will always be moans and groans about suppliers, especially on the internet *wink* So unless it's first hand experience generally I try not to take them on board *smile*

Does anyone know how much oil the Quaife 7 speed takes, without wishing to hijack this thread, also the Sadev *smile*

Catastrada an Elite IL 200 6 speed would be ok for your Duratec if its under 200lb torque

I bought mine through Simon at Meteor Motorsport who supplied the mounting bracket and worked out the ratios BUT if you have got any ideas of using it on the road forget it its a pig it was never designed for road use.

My Caterham is a track day car only (not registered).

I'm very pleased with my ccurrect Quaife qbe15z, 5 speed, h pattern, alloy main case and cover.

My Duratec does not rev very high as the max power is at 7.300 (engine built by Ammo).

To adapt my max speed I'm using 2 different rear tyres depending on the track .

With Michelin 22/54/13 max speed is 217 km/h at rev limiter (ok for A majority of tracks like Spa, Magny-Cours...). it´s way too short for Dijon or Hockenheim.

With Michelin 24/57/13 max speed is 230 km/h (like in Dijon, but slower in Spa or equal in the best condition as the straight line is going up).

Acceleration is fine with both tyres.

I don't have the torque value in my head, I need to check when back home (I'm currently on holiday).

(Max speed values are coming from AIM data login using the AIM GPS antenna).

  • 4 weeks later...

Depends who you buy it off. Today I would be paying 5320 euros 😬

If your not bothered about getting the most from your car, then the 6 speed will do, but if you are then the 7 speed will make you faster. It's simple, forget talk of torque closer gears saves you time and will make me faster *wavey*
