Support Team Shaun_E Posted January 12, 2019 Support Team Share Posted January 12, 2019 I’m looking for a replacement for my Stack dash, preferably with built in data logging. The Race Technology Dash 2 meets all my needs at a good price so has anyone fitted one in a Caterham? It looks like it will be a tight fit and probably the shift lights will be obscured by my 260 mm Momo. Pictures of one fitted would be great. CharlesElliott
A few racers have, and Roger Ford has one. And yes, I think he has a problem with seeing everything.I've used Race Technology for 14 years but am getting a bit fed up with them - I might defect to AIM or VBox. 7 wonders of the world
Have you considered these - https://www.etbinstruments.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=171I use one on the road perfect - great service and support too. Support Team Shaun_E Posted January 12, 2019 Author Support Team Share Posted January 12, 2019 Thanks Charles, AIM looks great but twice the price :-o I had a DL1 years ago but now use a Racekeeper who have just gone into administration. Dash 2 + GoPro seems ideal for HD video and data. Will contact Roger and see what he has to say. Digidash seems much improved but the GPS sampling rate is a bit low and I am looking to overlay data on video. Thanks for the pointer though. CharlesElliott
The AIM MXM is worth a look. You may have been using GoPro generically, but you can use any video source with RT as long as you have a video licence. I build real time dashboards with mine and export to video. Support Team Shaun_E Posted January 17, 2019 Author Support Team Share Posted January 17, 2019 I've bitten the bullet and ordered the Dash 2 Pro - they had a very good deal at Autosport International. I know it won't be perfect as the shift lights will likely be hidden behind the steering wheel but it will be better than the current Stack unit and will mean I can record HD video using a GoPro (I've ordered a Hero 7 Black) and overlay the data. I can re-use all the existing sensors which can be calibrated using the set-up software. I'll post some details when it's fitted - might be a while though! CharlesElliott
Interested in hearing how you get on (issues with predictive timing is my main moan!).No issue with a GoPro but you don't have to use a GoPro, any video source will work - they just label it GoPro as it is the most popular camera! Here's a sample video from me using the overlay - I paid someone to create the dial graphics :-)
Support Team Shaun_E Posted January 17, 2019 Author Support Team Share Posted January 17, 2019 Since most of my events are sprints and hill-climbs, predictive lap timing not so critical :-). I decided on GoPro as it has GPS built in as well which "should" make the video and data synchronisation a bit easier as it will be based on GPS timestamp - we'll see!Your video looks good - if mine is close to that quality, I'll be happy.I'll let you know how I get on and hopefully have some video from my first event (end of April). Thanks for the tips (and to Roger who responded to my by email).
CharlesElliott
I don't think RT can sync on GPS time (file time yes, but doesn't help much if you have to join chunks together to make one video). I tend to sync on the start, pretty easy to do as you can see the G trace move and watch the car rise. Only takes a minute....Looking forward to the video! BeingOriginal
Hey Shaun, I have the Dash2 in my car and you're right the 260mm Momo does partially obscure the shift lights (I'm 5'10 sitting in Tillets for reference) my car has a set of DRE shift lights to fix this. Support Team Shaun_E Posted January 21, 2019 Author Support Team Share Posted January 21, 2019 Thanks for the pictures - it's reassuring to see that it will fit nicely :-) I just wish my car and dashboard looked half as clean and tidy as yours! I've had a set of DRE lights on my car for years so will just carry on using them. On Saturday I removed the old Stack dash and started removing the Stack loom. If the mini Sure-Seal connectors I've ordered arrive this week, I'll hopefully trial fit the Dash 2 next weekend.Shaun
BeingOriginal
The wiring behind isn’t as neat (but I’m working on this) let me know if you have any questions.
MarkTheGoose
Shaun - off topic, but fishing for advice. I've got a Stack dash (in a CSR) that I'm trying to make work with DRE. 12v supply is fine, but I'm having trouble getting it to pick up the tacho pulses. The feed is connected to the black/white wire that comes out of the loom just behind the Stack connector. Do you have any recollections about how you made it work? It may be that I have a faulty DRE, but not sure how to to test this. The black/white wire shows 7v ac when the engine's running, so I wondered if it needed a pull-up resistor to get it to properly pulse between 0->12v
Support Team Shaun_E Posted July 6, 2020 Author Support Team Share Posted July 6, 2020 My wiring loom is somewhat bespoke so I don't' know the colour of the connections but I took a feed from the coil. As I have a wasted spark set-up I had to program the dash accordingly.
rj
MarkIt could be a 5V peak to peak from the ECU, and I doubt you need a pull-anyway resistor. I don't on my MBE 967...
