Richard_W
Hi all,I am about to replace my aged rear shocks and springs but I need to work out whether my current shocks are mounted through the De-dion tube or outside it... To me they seem to be outside but one persons definition is probably different to another! The picture attached is taken from below the rear left shock, at the bottom of the picture you can see the De-dion tube and how the shock is mounted. Can anyone advise as to whether this is defined as through the tube or outside. Thanks!
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted July 7, 2020 Leadership Team Share Posted July 7, 2020 That is "through the tube" mounting as per dedion cars prior to 1996. The mounting bolt passes through the centre of the tube.Stu.

Richard_W
Thanks Stu,Thats great, exactly why I asked, now I understand that through the tube means the mounting bolt it makes complete sense... I was probably being a bit slow!
Area Representative Geoff Brown Posted July 7, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted July 7, 2020 Doctor #3 - Up till about 1995 or so the ARB was mounted in the roof of the wheel arch area directly under the inertia seat belt void.
TomB
I think you need to get the wire brush & paint out!
Richard_W
Indeed! Its all being pulled apart anyway so it can be done then. I'm not much of a cleaner really but that will just brush off with a bit of encouragement!
brianjhall31
Get everything as clean as possible, especially the threads, before you reassemble. When inserting the lower mounting bolt you have to move the dedion a bit to align it with the suspension unit to ensure you enter the hole correctly and don't cross thread. Clean threads, copper slip and finger feel does it...
Bricol
On that arrangement its not so important - the plain hole takes the bolt straight through, shove the shock on and add the nut . . . or something like that :)
Toby S
#3 amd #7 - isn't the black rod at the top of the picture running under the boot floor and passing just above the differential the ARB - if not what is it - something to do with the suspension and I've always assumed that was the ARB
