Downlands
HiWhat do people use to stick the rearview mirror to the windscreen?I've given up on the Halfords sticky pads. They only last a month or two before the mirror falls off again.ThanksTim
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted February 23, 2020 Leadership Team Share Posted February 23, 2020 There's a glue kit (usually available in Halfords) that IIRC has a sort of superglue and a gauze into which the glue is spread, works much better than the sticky pads which although they used be good nowadays just don't work well. 7 wonders of the world
never had an issue, providing the glass is prepped with the alcohol wipe first
Wrightpayne
Ditto here - I use trim tape which has the same green backing as the halfords pads (so assume its the same stuff) Always clean with alcohol first and never had an issue.
DJ.
I bought a smaller mirror (made for Morgans ) , I didn't want to glue it on as suggested, so I riveted a 3mm thick aluminium plate to the base. I made it large enough to take two of the adhesive pads and the mirror has been rock solid since.Duncan
Member Jonathan Kay Posted February 23, 2020 Member Share Posted February 23, 2020 I couldn't find an adhesive pad that worked so, on the advice in a previous discussion, now use a Summit suction mirror. NB different sizes. Unlike toy arrows/ Dalek forehead adaptors these have a lever that creates the suction It's worked well for four years but now the lever doesn't bite properly anymore.Jonathan
JohnJo
I've never managed to get my mirror back up again since it fell off. Alcohol wipes, gentle screen heating, just won't stay on. I had a good look around for alternatives, eg something that could clamp over the top of the screen but still allow half roof on but to no avail. I know, it's a big ask for something like that I guess. Closest I found was this:https://www.vintagecarparts.co.uk/products/a-17681-interior-rear-view-mirror-6But would need removing if half roof needed to go on and profile probably wouldn't look good.I currently use suction cup and temporary put back original mirror using stickies for MOT (with fingers crossed). Colin Cooper
I use the sticky pads. I had the same problem - kept falling off, until I used two G clamps and left it for a couple of hours. Still there after five years.Col
John Vine
I've always used the standard Ford sticky pad.No problems in 20 years, but good preparation is essential as the screen needs to be scrupulously clean and degreased.JV

paisesmediterraneos
I used in my Caterham and other cars NURAL 5 from PATTEX, it's a special glue for car mirrors. I never had problems and the mirrors never were unglued. Regards
intermanxnorton
Hi Tim.Well, I've used 'No Nails' double sided clear tape, obtainable from B& Q, it's great and actually works, I use it all around the house and car, and never had a problem. Try it, it's fantastic stuff.pipknight.
SM25T
If you use the glass fixing pads ... clean glass with acetone or meths. Warm the glass. Green side of pad to glass.

JohnJo
I use ultra tape extra strong foam mounting tape product code 45669 from tool station which comes in a 25mm x 10m roll just trace round the mirror base cut out with scissors for a perfect shape the clean your screen with isapropyl alcohol to degrease it and then place where you want it...you only get one go because I misplaced mine and it's properly stuck on ! you can also use the tape for lots of other uses on the car such as number plate mounting etc. And it also only costs £2.99 per roll Just a quick update on Ralph's suggestion. I bought a roll of the recommended tape, cleaned the screen area as suggested and it seems to have worked a treat so far (though, obs, not driven a massive amount). The tape is easy to work with and super sticky.
Ralph45
Glad the tape worked for you to and it's such a large roll you just know you will find hundreds of other uses or it

David aka Blue7
I resurrected this thread because I just lifted the cover off my 7 to find my interior mirror on the floor. I had to replace my mirror last year due to desilvering around the edges. I used these pads to secure the new mirror, heating the windscreen with a hair dryer and cleaning with the supplied alcohol wipes. It worked well all year but is obviously affected by winter conditions and maybe humidity.https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MTOF45L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1The problem surface is the glass side and I find it amusing that I have never had any problems with the Caterham original fixing ... so maybe they should use the pads they use to secure the cycle wings I have found the ultratape on Tool Station and also on Amazon where it received a carp review so I looked at the "no more nails" product which in the small print stated not suitable for glass. I have just found this Auto Express review which is worth adding to this thread, they test five products, 3M VHB come out on top followed by Gorillahttps://www.autoexpress.co.uk/product-group-tests/352468/best-car-glass-adhesive-2020The Amazon pads have "3M" stamped on them but they are a different colour so maybe a Chinese fake? The ones shown in the Auto Express article are red and as they state, I have seen them supplied with Go Pro camera kits. They are available on Amazon but who knows if they are the genuine article so maybe I will buy direct from a specialist.I have considered a suction one, I have a suction camera mount fitted in my wife's car and that hasn't fallen off. ScottR400D
I used 3M VHB, the genuine stuff. Thorough clean of the mirror and glass, pressed firmly on then clamped in place with a couple of cheap plastic clamps, overnight. That was a couple of years ago after my granddaughter pulled it off the screen! It's still there.
