Area Representative Nick Bassett Posted May 16, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted May 16, 2018 My car has lowered headlight brackets fitted which I am not a fan of, so plan to re-fit the standard ones that were provided with the car when I bought it - these have been freshly power coated, so look great. Now, the wiring goes from the headlight, down inside the bracket and into the main loom via some plastic connectors, but I'm going to have to disconnect this to get the job done. Is it as easy as pull out & push back in again for the wiring, or is there more to it?Any advice/watch-outs welcome.Finally, I'll be advertising some lowered headlamp brackets on here soon!Thanks,Nick Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AdamQ Posted May 16, 2018 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Getting the individual wires out of the connectors is fairly easy: take the yellow insert out of the connector and then use one of those small watchmaker screwdrivers from the insert side to push the locking tag out slightly and then pull the wire out from the back (I've found it often works best to push the wire in a bit before levering out the locking tag and pulling the wire). They just push back in and click into place (I think they'll only click properly one way round, but it's probably worth noting which way up the connectors are inserted into the connecting block).To get the wires out through the bracket tube is usually simple enough - just stagger them so that they follow each other through the tube and pull the appropriate wires from the headlight end. Getting them back through the tubing of the new bracket is an altogether different matter. It can be done - lubrication, a 'pilot' wire to pull the wires through and all sorts of ingenious methods are used. In my experience it either takes five minutes or three hours - never anything in between.I'd be inclined to order some new connectors and rubber seal thingies and chop the connectors off the wires - that makes threading the wires through the bracket tube a whole lot easier.FWIW ...Adam Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I found when I purchased a car that had been converted to lower headlamp brackets the loom had been cut in a number of places, so I replaced the headlamp loom for about £5 per side from SVC. Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted May 16, 2018 Leadership Team Share Posted May 16, 2018 Nick, I suspect your SLR, like mine, has the earlier bullet type connectors ... a small copper bullet on each side of the connection which are connected by pushing them into a plastic covered copper sleeve, with an individual connector for each wire. Simply grab them firmly on each side and pull apart, you might be successful without damaging anything, you might not!Ideally you want to pull the bullet out on the lamp bracket side, altough I can't recall whether you can thread the wires through the headlamp bracket without removing the bullets themselves.Stu. Area Representative john m ryan Posted May 16, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted May 16, 2018 Hi Nick, As Paul Mason said I'm looking to lower my headlights, I have an imperial car, I contacted Caterham Cars today they said they only do brackets for metric cars, ( is your car metric ) I just don't know whether the brackets would fit ( with you having a metric car and mine being imperial). AdamQ Posted May 17, 2018 Share Posted May 17, 2018 I've used metric lowered brackets on an Imperial (1999) car - I basically had to after CC supplied a metric nosecone (without the cut-outs for the 'standard' brackets) to the paint shop and we found out too late. The brackets (and nosecone) both fit fine. I read somewhere that the CSR brackets are the ones you need for an Imperial car, but they were out of stock so I went with the other lowered brackets and, as I say, all was well. I had to drill a hole in the each of the top front wishbone mounts for the wires, but that was it as far as I remember.I hope that helps ...Adam Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Graham King Posted May 17, 2018 Share Posted May 17, 2018 Nick, the headlamp brackets on your car were fitted by me and made by someone on this forum, I can’t remember who actually made them now unfortunately. The connectors would have been replaced at that time. I fitted them to my Superlight as well. I actually prefer them but each to their own and understand their non-standard.
