rover ECU mems3 can i swap it out for another

ok, rover 2005 1.8K series,love the car but it feels a bit snatchy/on/off at light throttle.It has a Kmap modded MEMS3 ecu.My question is ,can i just plug in another rover mems3 ecu (standard) to see if it makes it more drivable on light throttle,will it have to be a 1.8 K series one or will a 1.6 do? Will i need any other bits ,remote fob and 5AS immob unit?

I really want to try it and if it does cure it then will see if Kmaps can dial the issue out

You can swap it. But you will either need an ECU with the immobiliser function disabled, or you will need the new ECU matching to your Immobiliser. If you want to borrow an ECU to try, or you want one programming up, either way I can help you.

But...

I doubt the Kmaps map is the issue. Yes it sharpens up the throttle response, but it shouldn't give you a snatchy one-off at low throttle.

There are two issues that are usually responsible for that.

1) Throttle position sensor out of calibration. Easy fix to try. Turn the ignition on but DON'T start, smoothly open the throttle to full and close it to idle again FIVE times. Then turn the ignition off. After that, switch on again and see if it's any better.

2) Throttle stop screw too far open. This means that by the time the ECU detects the engine is coming off idle and stops managing the idle and switches to drive strategy, it's already making power. So you get a big step. There are a few "gotchas" with adjusting it, so don't play with it for now. See how you get on with the calibration and we can go further if that doesn't fix it.

Does the engine have standard cams?

hi Andrew,

its a 1.8 roadsport 140 X power  so I think it has better cams(some had supersport ones),I will try the reset first  tomorrow and get back to you.I do wonder if play/backlash in the diff is not helping aswell.I just seems very sensitive,hard to keep constant on light throttle

I cant believe it should be this way ,my K series Elise was fine ,and also my westfield .I just doesnt feel refined/smooth

Sometines the bigger cams affect the breathing to the point where the throttle stop screw really does need adjusting for driveability.

I agree it shouldn't feel like that. See what the reset does and let us know. I'm sure we can get it better than it sounds like it is at the moment.

Another question. Do you have the aluminium intake and is your throttle body aluminium or plastic?

Andy, just taken the car for a quick short run,totally different car!! can hold on light throttle and the drivetrain isnt jerking and clunking.control of the throttle is easier and progressive.Thanks so much for your input the car is something like i was expecting it to be(although still need a LSD ) great place this forum and great people

PS: If you ever want to check it, not that you should have to, if you connect an OBDII scan tool that reports live data, it should show the TPS reading as exactly 3.92% at idle if it's calibrated correctly. If not, repeat the procedure and it will. Should only really need doing again if you swap ECUs or swap the TPS (or swap the throttle body complete with TPS).
