finmac
So I just refitted my dry sump pump after overhaul plus some shift lights. Went to restart car and she won't fire. Fuel is coming through OK but no spark.... best place to start?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted January 21, 2018 Member Share Posted January 21, 2018 What's the coil and plug arrangement?Cranking at a good speed?Do you have a multimeter? Was anything touched on the HT end during the work?Where did you connect the engine speed signal to the shift lights?Jonathan
finmac
It's a 1999 car with separate coil (no coil packs at plugs)Not cranking too fast but I'd have said enough to spark I do have a multimeter (but electrics ain't my strong point!)After the oil change I pulled the plug leads and coil wire from the distributor to crank fresh oil through engine before starting it properlyconnected the shift lights at the rev counter
Area Representative Piers300 Posted January 21, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted January 21, 2018 Check ECU earth and all earth connections.Piers
Member Jonathan Kay Posted January 21, 2018 Member Share Posted January 21, 2018 Not cranking too fast but I'd have said enough to spark What's the battery voltage at rest and during cranking? (Some 7s seem to be very susceptible to dropping the voltage too low for some part of the electronics.)After the oil change I pulled the plug leads and coil wire from the distributor to crank fresh oil through engine before starting it properlyRecheck the connections and that the right lead goes to the right plug.connected the shift lights at the rev counterIf it's reasonably easy disconnect and see if it makes any difference.JonathanEdited: Crossed with Piers', and checking earths is always a good idea. Wrightpayne
I’d disconnect the shift lights first then try.Ian
Area Representative Piers300 Posted January 21, 2018 Area Representative Share Posted January 21, 2018 A bad ECU earth will allow a spark, but it will not fire the injectors. Ask me how I know this !!!Try squirting some fuel into the throttle bodies, taking all due precautions and see if it starts.Piers
TomB
And put the battery on charge. If it’s got an Emerald, or the standard ECU requires a minimum cranking speed to start ignition, it might be that. I know the Emerald has a minimum to start the ignition process. Wrightpayne
Did you sort it out?Ian
finmac
Car now starting fine! after I disconnected the newly fitted shift lights..... so clearly an issue related to their installation.... grrrLights are genuine ACES ones and i managed to trace the problem back to the sleeved sensor cable which had not connected properly a decent mornings work! Thanks for all the advice chaps

finmac
Now need to get the shift lights wired right! The screened cable seems to be the issue and Not quite sure how to connect it to the rev counter sensing wire? Tried just connecting the inner wire but it's not right and not sure what to do with the screened outer wire?
