Suspension height

Hi guys, I’ve noticed from trackday pics the front looks a bit high. I have a factory built 420R and everything is as it was from factory. I know I should get it set up properly. In the mean time I’d like to drop the front a bit for track days then raise it back for clearance on the road. Oh and correct tool for the collars? Any advice appreciated.

Hi Jonathon, it was the BookaTrack photographer who pointed out it was higher than normal at the front when at Donnington. Having looked at the pics it’s clear it’s higher than others at the front. It has a dry sump so where is the correct place front and rear to measure for rake? Also it has a double collar I seem to think eibach springs. Standard 420R suspension not the race ones. I don’t have the car with me to get pics at the moment then I probably wouldn’t know how to upload them. J

Jh...Ride Height really isn't something to do on the fly, just get the car corner weighted properly. You can also contact Simon Rogers at Meteor Motorsports and ask him to send you his ' setting ride height' document which is a good starting point.

Whereabouts are you?  Id recommend a proper setup session - I home dabbled for years with measurements and endless frustration, but I got fed up with the semi guesswork and took it to Dave Gemzoe near Wakefield for a set up.  Its made a noticeable difference to the weight of steering, the stability on the road and general road manners.  Cost £165 which I didn't think unreasonable for most of the day.

Do not be lulled into thinking that as they are part of the dealer chain that they know better. There aee a number of companies/ guys who know how to set up the cars how you want it . Dave Gemzoe has been mentioned already, he participates on the club sprint championship so does know how to make the cars work. Northampton Motorsport, are another, I can personally vouch for their skill and knowledge, and Mcmillan Motorsport in Hinckley so you have a number of 'local' choices.

I’ve booked it in at BookaTrack on March 27th for corner weighting. So I can enjoy the afternoon watching the BTCC cars on track at donnington  as it’s their official season launch and pre season test during the afternoon. It was great last year and free.

Having just measured the car to ground. Front of rear wing ground to chassis and rear of front wing ground to chassis is 165mm on all four corners so no rake at all?

The  dampers are bilstein and the springs are eibach. The dampers have adjustable double collars and there is around 30 mm of thread bellow the lowest collar.

Tazio, I’m aware there are many companies that can set up my car. I chose BookaTrack because it’s most convenient for me and I have got to know some of the guys there over the last couple of years. They have a large fleet of track Caterhams and look after customer race cars and trackday cars so I,m confident they know their stuff.

Please tell us how the set-up session goes.

Front of rear wing ground to chassis and rear of front wing ground to chassis is 165mm on all four corners so no rake at all?

For use on roads (and the associated obstacles) I'd want to know the current clearance under the sump (or whatever) and to specify what that's going to be when it's done.
