Paul Mason
Out on a run today, my throttle cable snapped, or so I thought. Upon inspection, it is held/clamped at the TB end with a nut squeezing it between a couple of washers. Its all a bit mangled now with a roadside repair so was thinking I'll but some bike brake cable and a couple of cylindrical metal shealths with screws in to attach each end (through the hole in the throttle pedal and then clamped) and re-use the nut and bolt on the TB end with another clamp after it for security. Can anyone see any issues with that plan? Also, anyone know the name of the metal cylindrical shealths with the screws through?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted May 23, 2019 Member Share Posted May 23, 2019 Yes, bike cables are widely used."Solderless nipple"? A local bike shop might have some for you to choose from.Jonathan
Paul Mason
Thanks JK, off to Halfords as my closest bike shop and will fashion a replacement with some additional redundancy built in
Paul Mason
Wasn't thinking of that type, more a shealth that the cable slide through with 2 screws on the side

rj
Paul,I've used the thingy JK has linked to at the pedal end and clevis like thishttps://media.rs-online.com/t_large/F3120185-01.jpgwhere the end like thishttps://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/FNYAAOSw0j9ZXPDF/s-l1600.jpghas just been fed through the thread.I've also used a 90deg bended tube from an MTB (I think) to get it guided in the right direction.I'll see if I can remember to take a couple of pictures tomorrow or Saturday when I pack the trailer for a trackday Sunday. StevehS3
At the throttle body end be sure that the clamp can rotate freely otherwise the cable is continuously bending causing it to fray and snap. Bicycle brake (not gear) inner cable was fine on mine.
Paul Mason
Thanks all, now sorted, used bike brake cable with a bobble on each end cut in half (with the second half now in the boot in case it ever happens again). Used the bobble end on the TB end so even if the nut comes off the bobble will keep the cable attached and a couple of solderless nipples on the pedal end. All good and working again to enjoy more sunshine
