CageyH
My gearbox speedo angle drive has failed on the way home from the control technique. I have the 5 speed type 9 box with a Caerbont speedo.Caterham have them in stock, but I am looking to see what car they originally came from as I may be able to get one quicker from the local parts suppliers if I can find the relevant info.Any help greatly appreciated. CageyH
Thanks. It is not the quill. It appears that the gears have worn themselves away into a fine paste.
CageyH
To order one from Richfield, I need to know the ratio gerbox/speedo, but I can't do this as my drive is broken.Does anybody have any idea what the ratio of the angle drive is? John Vine
Have you tried Marcassus Sport? They're in Colomiers, not far from you.Ask for Sophie (Watson-Brown) in Parts -- assuming she's still there. She might even have an angle drive in stock which she could measure for you. (She's English, but I guess your French is pretty good by now!)JV
CageyH
Thanks John.I tried them, but they have no stock.I am contemplating stripping mine down and working out the ratio of the angle drive unit.
Bricol
I always thought it was a straight one to one - the required reduction gearing done via the gearbox quill.
John Vine
Yes, that makes complete sense. The angle drive is only there because of the restricted space in the transmission tunnel. In the Sierra installation, the speedo cable enters the gearbox housing in a straight line (courtesy Haynes manual):This 1:1 relationship between gearbox drive and speedo would need to remain the same with the angle drive.JV
CageyH
I have stripped my broken angle drive down, as I got fed up with waiting for stock to arrive. I assume that there is a one way bearing for the gearbox quill to fit in, as this seems to be the part that has failed as the quill turns freely in both directions when I turn the worm wheel. The gear teeth look fine after a clean up. I can't get the quill out, but it has been in there for 22 years, so it is probably quite happy! You guys are correct that it is a 1:1 ratio, so it seems like it is part number RGB1030-03A NR from Speedograph Richfield Ltd that is required, as if I am correct, it is a non-reversing angle drive. I just hope that this one lasts just as long as the current one did.The worm wheel and worm drive both have 10 teeth on them.
