Wing mirrors on the doors

Afternoon,

Quick query, seeking clarification regarding fitting my side mirrors to the doors.  Yes I'm not putting them on the windscreen, I've checked and the IOM test won't require fitting to the screen, so I can side step that step.

So the 2015 assembly manual says "Locate the holes pre-drilled in the metal frames (approximately 130mm from the front corner and 104mm apart) then drill through the material with a sharp 5mm drill."

As far as I can tell my doors don't have any holes under the material, but do have a cut out section around the size of the mirror base.  Has the door design been revised since the assembly guide was published?

I'd also really appreciate some photos of recent installs, factory or otherwise.   The fixings supplied with the mirrors are only self tappers, which I'm slightly suspicious of too.

Thanks

I would consider other options before drilling the doors - I think there are better alternatives out there?

You could always mount them on the windscreen stanchion for the approvals and then put on what you want later? No damage done to the stanchion doing this as the IVA mirrors are just mounted in an existing screw hole!

The mounts that use the hinges have the twin advantages of fewer vibrations and they are also higher so easier to see over the rear wheel arches.

All in my humble opinion of course!!

If you search ‘Caterham wing mirror images’ there are some showing the standard mirror on the screen.

My cat was IVA’d with the mirrors on the screen, then I fitted Racetech ones to the doors later. They’re smaller, shake less and look better.

You have to take the base off the standard ones to fit to screen but it’s easy enough.

I agree with Garth, get it through the IVA with the screen mount adapters then afterwards fit a pair of Eccles' hinge mount brackets with SPA mirrors ... in carbon fibre of course! If you go this route later you'll regret having drilled the doors.

They are great little mirrors. No vibration unlike the original door-mounted mirrors that I found to be totally inappropriate for safety in this little car (coming from motorcycles myself). Small though they are, they give a good clear view on both sides.

You want the single seater mirror - you can get LHS & RHS. You’ll also need the mirror mount shown in the link you sent. One kit is enough to mount two mirrors.

I found this link helpful when I chose/fitted mine. Just be careful cutting down the fixing bolts so they do not contact the windscreen glass.

Thanks, I've gone what that.  I do recall driving Oakmere's 620S and commenting on how bad the mirrors were, not because of the angle or size, just that they vibrated so much to the point they were useless.

I just hope I don't screw up the install and crack the screen....

Any vibrations are significantly reduced. I have had the Racetec mirrors in the past and found the door would often hit the mirrors when fitted to the windscreen knocking them out of alignment. You also cant fully open the doors!

I'm not a fan of the standard mirrors, so having something a little more, well sporty looking wouldn't be a bad thing.  It's cost me 70 quid for the mirrors and mounts from Demon Tweaks so not a massive deal.  I can talk to Oakmere when I visit them about how the factory ones are mounted to the door should I want to in future.  To be honest I can't find appropriate hardware anyway, so I'd need to order some black countersunk bolts and black nylocs before proceeding with factory supplied units.

I also have the aeroscreen stuff, so I'll need to look at mounting the mirrors on that too.  But that can wait.
