X/F .. I'm weeping !!!

Winter jobs !!
Calling on crossflow club people again for a bit of guidance.
Had a very very slight weep on my original copper rad. Bought an ally one off ebay - fitted good - looked great ... until I tried to put the nose cone on .. it wouldn't fit.
Money refunded hopefully.   But .....
Should I get the old one fixed ?  A couple of firms here in Notts have said they don't recore anymore - just new stuff because they can't get the cores ?!?.
Were these rads built for Caterham (1990) ??  or are they off something else (Reliant Robin, old school stuff !!) ??  Help.
I can't really afford £250 plus for a rad.

Plenty of places you can get a repair. Problem is that when the repair soldering is done the metallurgy of solder onto deteriorated metal will only last a short while. I wint through this when I had the original core replaced with a 3 layer core. Improved for a couple of years but then replaced from Radtec. Suggest you try a can of radweld which should control most weeps while you save up for a decent replacement.

Speak to either of the Darrens at Radtec ( top blokes) and you can normally get from stock a new rad and 11" fan for £250 . Bigger fan has certainly helped keep my xf temps more stable.

I echo the above re repairs, you have to be very lucky to get one to last, also I am wary of Radweld as I am told it can cause sludge build up in the smaller heater core.  I have alloy replacement in my 96 S3 and it fitted straight on with room to spare, I think I bought it from Redline.

Good luck.

If you want a cheap repair, I'm running my Sigma engined car with a Polo radiator that cost £28 from Ebay like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW-RADIATOR-VOLKSWAGEN-POLO-1-0-PETROL-1983-TO-1990-KIT-CAR-380mm-CORE/282665235439?fits=Model%3APolo+Classic&epid=13015445943&hash=item41d02933ef:g:Q88AAOSwSrNZ8ZLK:rk:3:pf:1&frcectupt=true

It required a bit of ingenuity to fit, and new mounts, but it cools well and has lasted longer than the Caterham radiator and two replacement Radtecs. I got so fed up of failing radiators, I decided to buy the cheapest so I didn't mind replacing it every year and it's lasted five!

Thanks for that,I'm going shopping.

love your car,my roots are in xf sevens from the late eighties up to about 95 when life's economics unfortunately took control and my beloved racer had to go.

your car with the choice of colour, the lights ,wheels, stone guards etc looks so bang up to date it's unreal but I bet it sounds a million times better than any post xf car.

Thanks again and I hope one day to meet you and drool over your car.

thanks,Ralph

All sorted now I think.

Couldn't get an exact copy done in ally from anybody including radtech. Some needed fan resiting etc!

So. I have decided to go with a recore from a local company (Cooltex (£160)).

I really wanted to upgrade to a lighter ally tank but when they are both full of water I guess there isn't that much difference for  road use.
